13 November 2018Édouard Philippe appointed Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia On 11 November 2018, the Prime Minister was appointed Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia by the Governor-General of Australia. The ceremony took place at the Australian Embassy in Paris. This award is a sign of recognition of Édouard Philippe’s distinguished service in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, as Mayor of Le Havre and as Prime Minister. On 25 April 2018, the Prime Minister and his Australian counterpart had marked Anzac Day, which commemorates the Australians military involvement in World War I. TweeterPartagerEnvoyer 11 November 2018: on this centenary anniversary of the World War I armistice, French and Australian citizens alike gathered in the morning at the Australian National Memorial of Villers-Bretonneux (Somme), a homage to all the Australians who died on the Western front during World War I, joining with Europe as a whole to commemorate this historic milestone which finally ended four years of the world at war.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, was received at the Australian Embassy in Paris by the Governor-General of Australia, who awarded him with the Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service in support of bilateral relations between the two countries.

With the Centenary ceremonies now drawing to a close, Édouard Philippe said in his address, [it is our responsibility] to uphold them and pass them on. That is why, Mr Governor-General, France has talked to your country about setting up a Franco-Australian foundation for identifying and funding educational and cultural projects bearing on this shared history. This foundation, which Ambassador Stephen Brady will chair, is expected to be established in 2019, he explained.

In this way, hundreds of thousands of French and Australian citizens will continue, year after year, to keep alive the memory of these young French people, these young Australians who, together, and often side by side, gave their lives both for France and for Australia, he pledged.
