Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met today with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on the margins of the 33rd African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Prime Minister affirmed Canada’s steadfast commitment to the African Union’s important role in promoting an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa. Prime Minister Trudeau and Chairperson Faki discussed ways to support continued economic transformation and growth in Africa, recognizing the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement to create jobs and grow the middle class. The Prime Minister affirmed Canada’s continued support for the African Union’s work to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The two leaders discussed the importance of economic growth that creates opportunities for all, including jobs for youth, and supporting Africa’s dynamic women entrepreneurs and leaders. The two leaders also exchanged views on contemporary challenges to peace and security in Africa, further to Canada’s role as 2020 Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission. The Prime Minister acknowledged the crucial role played by the African Union on the continent, and expressed appreciation for Chairperson Faki‘s leadership on the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
