Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today met with the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, on the margins of the 33rd African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Trudeau discussed President el-Sisi’s Chairmanship of the African Union and expressed Canada’s commitment to continued partnership with the AU.

The two leaders discussed strengthening economic relations, as most recently illustrated by the Cairo Monorail infrastructure project. Prime Minister Trudeau and President el-Sisi also considered political and security issues in the region, as well as the importance of supporting sustainable peace and development through multilateral institutions.

This meeting builds on Canada’s recent engagement as a strategic partner in support of Egypt’s African Union presidency, which saw Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne participate in the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development.
